The Board of Directors of the Flemish Opera and Royal Ballet of Flanders has tonight announced the appointment of Lena de Meerleer as General Director of the Flemish Opera and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. Lena de MeerLeer will take up her new post on September 1, 2013. At the same time it was announced that Pol Bamelis will become the new president of the unified board. Lena de Meerleer leaves VRT where she is currently General Manager of Production.
Along with the artistic directors of the Flemish Opera and the Royal Ballet of Flanders, respectively Aviel Cahn and Assis Carreiro, Lena de Meerleer will work in the new management structure to see through the merger of the two institutions from January 1, 2014.

The Royal Ballet Flanders celebrates the centenary of the great 20th century British composer Benjamin Britten with Britten Dances, a very special programme that not only pays tribute to this very British of composers, but also unveils the dances that Britten’s music continues to inspire. The Chambre Orchestra and Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen conducted by Benjamin Pope will accompany these performances. More info and tickets…

Acclaimed choreographer Christian Spuck created The Return of Ulysses especially for the Royal Ballet Flanders and it became an instant international success. This welcome revival offers an opportunity to see this tour de force evening long work that brings to the stage Spuck’s unique choreographic signature that is both poignant, humorous and singular.
The story unravels as for twenty years Penelope has to wait for the return of her husband Odysseus. The endless wait – that absurd atmosphere of hope and hopelessness – and the pressure of numerous enthusiastic and insistent suitors.
With music by Purcell and chansons and songs from Charles Trenet to Doris Day create a colorful palette of atmospheric dance and music.
The celebrated Principal Dancer Alain Honorez returns for this production to the Royal Ballet Flanders as a guest artist.

The Royal Ballet of Flanders returns to the stage next week triumphant from receiving the prestigious Award for Outstanding Company by the Critics’ Circle at the National Dance Awards in London. Artistic Director Assis Carreiro attended the ceremony with principal dancers Aki Saito and Wim Vanlessen who both accepted the award on behalf of the company and its dancers.

From 3-7 January 2013, our Artistic Director Assis Carreiro brought together 28 Artistic Directors of the world’s top dance companies to discuss global challenges in leadership. The Retreat took place at the prestigious Jerwood DanceHouse in the UK.
